THE BELLEVILLE OUTFIT
TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM
CD Called WANDERIN’ a Delightful Mix of Gypsy, Swing, Jazz, Roots Music
AUSTIN, Texas — The Belleville Outfit, the Austin six-piece band with a seamless acoustic sound of gypsy, swing, big band, jazz and cross-genre Americana roots music, is set to release its debut recording, WANDERIN,’ on Feb. 5, 2008.
WANDERIN,’ a collection of original songs and covers that runs the gamut from the roots-y title track to the love song-of-a-sort “Somebody Like You” to the plucky ’50s-style “Wonder Why,” was recorded in Nashville, engineered by Bil Vorndick, and co-produced by John Rees, Vorndick and The Belleville Outfit. Songs like the sprightly, piano-punctuated “Don’t Take It for Granted” spotlight band members’ incredibly harmonic playing and tight delivery and a spirit of good, old-fashioned music.
The band — Rob Teter on guitar and lead vocals, Phoebe Hunt on violin and lead vocals, Jonathan Konya on drums, Connor Forsyth on piano, Jeff Brown on upright bass, and Marshall Hood on lead guitar and harmony vocals — has been at it for less than a year, premiering at Merlefest 2007 after Rob pulled it together in New Orleans. It’s racking up sold-out shows throughout Texas and up and down the East Coast.
Each member of The Belleville Outfit has solid musical experience, with three of them (Rob, Jeff and Marshall) growing up together in Spartanburg, S.C., and forming The DesChamps Band. Phoebe is classically trained on the violin and won a 2006 Daniel Pearl Foundation memorial violin to play for a year; she is now exploring all the possibilities of fiddle playing. Connor and Jonathan were studying music and business at Loyola along with Rob when the joint decision was made to move to Austin.
With such an accomplished sound, strong vocals and grasp of music styles, audiences are startled at band members’ 20-something age. Touring behind the new release begins immediately, including a stop in Memphis for a showcase during The Folk Alliance, to turn even more listeners into fans.
