THE BELLEVILLE OUTFIT
TO PLAY SHOWCASE
AT SXSW MUSIC 2008
Band Also Part of Walter Hyatt Tribute at Austin Music Awards March 12
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Belleville Outfit, whose mystic acoustic sound that mixes swing, gypsy, jazz and cross-genre Americana roots music is captured in original songs and clever covers on its debut album, WANDERIN', will play an official showcase at South By Southwest Music Festival 2008 this month in Austin as well as the Austin Music Awards that kick it off.
The Belleville Outfit will play its Official Showcase at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Jovita's, 1617 S. First St. The showcase starts at 8 p.m. with other string bands including Quebe Sisters Band at 9 p.m. and South Austin Jug Band at 12:45 a.m. The show is for all ages. More information and a complete lineup are available at www.sxsw.com/music.
Belleville will also perform in "South Carolina by Birth, Texas by Choice: The Songs of Walter Hyatt," a tribute to the iconoclastic tunes of the late singer-songwriter, during the Austin Music Awards on Wednesday, March 12, that also features Warren Hood and David Ball of Uncle Walt's Band. Admission is SXSW wristband and badge or tickets, $15 in advance, $20 at the door; more at www.austinchronicle.com.
The Belleville Outfit is scheduled to play three other shows that week: at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, during the Austin Daze Party at Ruta Maya; at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, March 15, during an Austin booking agents' party at Threadgill's World Headquarters in South Austin; and at 9 p.m. during a Closing Party at The Oaks on Sunday, March 16.
The six-member gypsy-swing-jazz-roots band -- Rob Teter on guitar and lead vocals called "cool Cajun crooning" by Mountain Times, Phoebe Hunt on violin and lead vocals likened to channeling Billie Holliday, Jonathan Konya on drums, Connor Forsyth on piano, Jeff Brown on upright bass, and Marshall Hood (nephew of the legendary instrumentalist Champ Hood) on lead guitar and harmony vocals -- is currently touring and selling out shows behind WANDERIN' (February 5), which debuted at #31 on the Americana chart and which one writer said has "a sound that's simultaneously out of time and very much in the present, with a genuine feel for its Southern roots."
The Lexington Herald Leader wrote: "The music is an appealing sampler of Teter tunes that run from animated swing ('Caroline') to leisurely country strolls ('Ease My Mind') to Western-tinged blues ('Been Here Before'). Rounding out the recording is a pair of songs by the late Austin songsmith Walter Hyatt ... and the [intricate] fiddle swing of the 1946 Peggy Lee hit 'It's a Good Day.' The latter could almost be a theme song for The Belleville Outfit. Its music has a pronounced drive, yet the feel is light. It might flirt with the blues, but the resulting attitude is seldom less than exuberant. And it hints at swing, country and jazz sounds from the '40s and early '50s, but nothing of WANDERIN' sounds like a museum piece."
Hunt herself told the Herald Leader: "This is fun music. Playing it at shows and making people happy, that's what keeps us going. It makes you feel like what you're doing matters."
