Her August Schedule is Filled with Hill Country Shows;
She Goes National in the Fall
AUSTIN, Texas — Bluesy singer-songwriter Paula Nelson will play Austin City Limits Music Festival in September with the Paula Nelson Band, but August will see her from one end of the Texas Hill Country to the other, showcasing cuts from her latest release, the sultry, no-nonsense LUCKY 13 (Pedernales Records; Feb. 26, 2008).
Nelson is scheduled to play at 12:40 p.m. on the BMI Stage on Friday, September 26, at Austin City Limits Music Festival, the three-day music extravaganza in Zilker Park.
However, Nelson — who, with the filming of her role in the political thriller “Conflict of Interest” (due for release next year), has added actress to a packed résumé that includes stunt woman, stunt driver and martial artist — will spend the month of August criss-crossing the Hill Country to play shows including: August 1-2 at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels (with Reckless Kelly), August 13 at Hill’s Café in Austin (with The Derailers), August 16 at the Back Porch Cantina in Kerrville, August 29 at The Auslander in Fredericksburg, August 30 at Poodie’s Hilltop Bar and August 31 at BatFest in Austin.
Says Texas Music Times: “Paula ranges from blues to Beatles on LUCKY 13, and the result is a fun musical ride with a little yodel mixed with jazz, blues, country and kick-butt rock and roll. Paula penned 10 of the 13 tracks, and two of the covers are duets with vocal and musical star George Devore … In addition to the duets with Devore the most notable tracks on the CD are ‘Fire Below,’ ‘Baby You're Mean,’ ‘Find Your Way,’ ‘Standing Tall’ and ‘Day to Day Love.’
“In all,” says the Times, “Paula Nelson delivers her own individual treat of a record … a kick-butt fun record [that] stands all on its own with or without a famous name. A must-have.”
Nelson has been touring constantly since the album’s release. In March, people were talking about Nelson’s karate kick — seen everywhere from YouTube to “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” In April, she drove a stock car to second place in a 10-lap race for charity. In May, she joined family to take part in the Give Love Give Life benefit concert for ovarian cancer research. She sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the start of the first-ever Peace of Mind Rally/5K in mid-June to benefit American soldiers with combat-related brain injuries. In July, she finished filming her role as mistress of the character actor Michael Madsen plays in “Conflict of Interest.” This fall, Paula Nelson Band tours nationally, playing Arkansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico and Tennessee.
