QUEBE SISTERS BAND CELEBRATING LATEST CD
QSB’s TIMELESS Packs 3-Part Harmony, Triple Fiddles
& Classic Sound of Western Swing, Jazz, Vintage Country
AUSTIN, Texas — Armed with its latest CD, TIMELESS (FiddleTone Records), the award-winning Quebe Sisters Band, or QSB, has been bringing audiences to their feet with talent to the third power (as in three voices, three-part harmony and triple fiddles) in shows scheduled from Texas to Canada now through summer.
The swing-jazz-vintage country quintet — which was recently tagged 2007 group/duo of the year by the Academy of Western Artists and earned the 2007 Crescendo Award from the Western Music Association — features Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe (pronounced kway-bee), whose pure, sweet, three-part harmony vocals have been likened more than once to the Andrews Sisters of the 1940s and whose mastery of their fiddles takes listeners by surprise then delight. They’re backed by the swinging rhythm guitar of Joey McKenzie and Drew Phelps on upright bass. All together they create a feel-good sound that’s crisp, clean, classic and — well — timeless.
Onstage, QSB’s upbeat spirit and playfulness shine through, as they do on TIMELESS, with its Western swing-jazz-Texas fiddle tunes — from the Sons of the Pioneers’ standard “So Long to the Red River Valley” to Duke Ellington’s “Take the ‘A’ Train” to Spade Cooley’s “Shame on You” to Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell’s “Georgia on My Mind” — and the astounding technical musicianship in each.
“These unsinkable mollies could be tagged ‘The Great-Granddaughters of the Pioneers,’ writes Michael Corcoran of the Austin American-Statesman. “What makes this CD so charming, if not challenging, is that Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe sound like they were having a blast recording it at John Carter Cash’s cabin studio outside of Nashville. It's a record you can hear smiling the whole time. There are times that are right for dark, moody tunes, but sometimes you just want music to make you feel better. That’s what TIMELESS is for.”
QSB is touring behind the release, with stops including Fort Worth’s Bass Hall for its return performance in “A Ride with Bob,” a musical drama celebrating the life of Bob Wills that features Ray Benson & Asleep at the Wheel, and shows in Canada, California and Nevada and across Texas. In August, the band played the 46th Philadelphia Folk Festival and NYC’s Lincoln Center; during the summer and fall, shows in Nova Scotia, Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

QSB has been invited to showcase during the South by Southwest Music & Media Conference, March 12-16 in Austin.
At mercurial speed, the Quebe girls have mustered their love of music and their musical talent. For starters, they happened to go to a fiddle contest in Denton, Texas, and hear real fiddle music. It was a short step to lessons with band-mate-to-be and three-time fiddle world champion McKenzie, who’s also fluent in mandolin and tenor guitar and banjo, and his wife, Sherry. All three girls now hold fiddle championship honors. In summer 2004, they began singing together, and less than a year later, they sang onstage at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nev. — as fast as a Texas fiddle breakdown.
