THE QUEBE SISTERS BAND
CELEBRATES CD RELEASE IN AUSTIN

Sister-Led Quintet’s TIMELESS Packs 3-Part Harmony, Triple Fiddles
& Classic Western Swing-Vintage Country Tunes

AUSTIN, Texas — The Quebe Sisters Band, which delightfully demonstrates the power of three (as in three voices, three-part harmony and triple fiddles), is set to celebrate the release of TIMELESS (FiddleTone Records) with a show in Austin.

The Quebe Sisters Band plays at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 8, at Saxon Pub, 1320 S. Lamar Blvd. in Austin. Cover is $10; information: 512.448.2552. In October, the band plays on Austin radio, in a theater production and at another famous Austin music venue.

The quintet is led by Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe (pronounced kway-bee), whose pure, sweet, three-part harmony vocals have been likened more than once to the Andrews Sisters of the 1940s and whose mastery of their fiddles knocks listeners into next week. They’re joined by the swinging rhythm guitar of Joey McKenzie and Drew Phelps on upright bass. Together they create a sound that’s vintage, classic and — well — timeless.

Onstage, The Quebe Sisters Band’s upbeat personality and playfulness shines through, as it does on the new release, TIMELESS, with its Western swing-jazz-cowboy-Texas fiddle tunes — from the Sons of the Pioneers’ standard “So Long to the Red River Valley” to Duke Ellington’s “Take the ‘A’ Train” to Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell’s “Georgia on My Mind” — and the astounding technical musicianship in each.

The band will tour behind the release through the end of the year, with stops including the 46th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival in August and New York City’s Lincoln Center and shows in Nova Scotia, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California and Branson, Mo., and throughout Texas.

To get started, the Quebes had to go to a fiddle contest in Denton, Texas, and hear real fiddle music; for the three, it was love at first sight (or sound). McKenzie and his wife, Sherry, were competing, and it was a short step to fiddle lessons with Sherry and later Joey McKenzie, a three-time fiddle world champion who’s also fluent in mandolin and tenor guitar and banjo. All three girls now hold fiddle championship honors. In summer 2004, they began singing together, and less than a year later, they sang onstage at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nev. — as fast as a Texas fiddle breakdown.
